Thanks for the great review. I just ordered one a few days ago and my decision to go with the X1 was in large part due to your detailed review. Thanks and keep them coming!

[...] Re: X1-to buy or not to buy? I know I love mine. The people at Liquivision have really stood behind their product too, which is nice. Not saying the Shearwater people wouldn't. Also no need to send back to Europe for software updates, any fix or issues, good for north american divers.
More info on that. The newer X1 units can be opened up and re-potted. Older models would just be replaced by the manufacturer. From what I hear only 5-6 batteries have failed out of the 1500+ units that have been sold thus far.

It's a good point but I'd have to say I don't care. It's their problem if I need repair. From what I understand they can un-pot it though.

Erik:
You always give the best ,concise reviews, but what I can't grasp from the above comment is if the X1 is potted, can't the manufacturer do the neccessary repairs?? I know if I have any problems with my Megalodon, and haven't yet, I'd go straight to the source, (Leon Scamahorn). Even with a warranty expiring dive companies will fix their equipment if the owner is willing to pay.

Hmmm, how do you figure ? Obvious from their battery policy, the thing can be opened by the manufacturer and re-potted. Also, like any electronics, past warranty, you'll have to pay for repairs, just like the VR3. At least (and I know it's not a problem for you, being in the UK), we don't have to ship it to Europe to get it fixed, it's handled in North America. My experience with the VR3 is that you had to pay for every repair including their famous "Health Check service" as well as any software update, from year to year (which includes bug fixes):

• VR3 Firmware Only Upgrade (Faster Turnaround) : $149.95
• VR3 Health Check (includes Firmware Update): $199.95

The X1 looks OK but as it is impossible to repair due to it being potted, after your warrenty period is up you may have just bought possibly the most expensive paper weight in the world!! At least with a VR3 you can get it repaired.

Wow, seriously? Since one of the main uses of V-planner is to generate tables in case of a primary and/or secondary decompression computer failure, by this logic should we also be cutting no-fly and total desaturation time tables to carry with us and remind us 12-24 hours after said (possible) failure that we shouldn't fly?? It's amazing that we haven't all gotten bent before this revelation ... :)

I have seen the thread on the Liquvision Forums and I think that Ross gave a fair explanation to why he doesn't think these should be included. The no-fly time is something agencies and DAN push (and I think they're right to do so) but don't agree on. Theoretically you should be able to fly after you dive but we know this is not safe. I follow the 24 hours rule, there is always something to visit around your dive location or an opportunity to wind down, clean your gear, rest. Within 24 hours, you'll be completely desaturated. I don't need (want) the computer to give me a safe time. I don't know of any that do (at least computed), they give you 12 hours or 24. I can make that choice and calculation by myself based on my training.
